Drum Dryer
Drum Dryer Manufacturer | High-Efficiency Single & Double Drum Drying Systems
Introduction
GTI Technologies is one of the leading Drum Dryer manufacturers in India, engineering high-efficiency, continuous Single and Double Drum Dryers for processing liquids, slurries, pastes, suspensions, and viscous materials into powders, flakes, or granules.
Our Drum Dryers utilize indirect conductive heat transfer via steam-heated rotating drum surfaces. By spreading a thin liquid film over the heated drum, rapid evaporation occurs within seconds, followed by continuous removal of the dried film using precision doctor blades (knives).
Unlike direct hot air dryers, Drum Dryers transfer heat directly through the metal drum shell, eliminating the need for massive air volumes and complex dust recovery systems. This delivers:
Exceptional thermal efficiency
Ultra-fast drying times (seconds)
Minimal power and fuel consumption
Compact physical footprint
Gentle thermal treatment for heat-sensitive slurries
High product purity and low dust generation
Simple, continuous, one-step operation
GTI designs and manufactures Single Drum Dryers, Double Drum Dryers, and Twin Drum Dryers with capacities ranging from pilot-scale R&D units to heavy-duty continuous industrial production plants.
What is an Drum Dryer (Single / Double Drum)?
A Drum Dryer is a continuous, conductive, indirect drying machine featuring one or two internal steam-heated rotating cylinders (drums). The liquid, slurry, or paste feed is applied as a thin, uniform film over the outer revolving surface. Heat conducted through the drum shell rapidly evaporates moisture, leaving a dry layer that is continuously scraped off by adjustable doctor blades.
Single Drum Dryer
Features a single heated drum with feed application via dip pan, applicator rolls, or top feed rollers. Ideal for viscous pastes, heat-sensitive suspensions, gelatinized products, and heavy slurries requiring precise film control.
Double Drum Dryer
Features two parallel drums rotating toward each other with a narrow, adjustable gap (nip) between them. Liquid feed is poured into the sump formed between the drums. As they rotate, a thin film is drawn onto each drum, making it highly versatile for low-to-medium viscosity solutions, slurries, and sticky materials.
Working Principle of Continuous Drum Dryer (Single / Double Drum)?
Feed Application: Liquid, slurry, or solution enters the drum via dip tray, spray nozzles, applicator rolls, or the nip feed between double drums.
Thin Film Formation: A uniform, thin layer of liquid adheres smoothly across the outer surface of the steam-heated drum.
Rapid Indirect Heating: Steam inside the drum shell rapidly heats the drum wall, boiling off moisture in seconds as the cylinder rotates.
Vapor Removal: Vaporized moisture rises into a custom-designed exhaust hood and vapor recovery system.
Continuous Scraping: Before completing a full rotation, an adjustable doctor blade continuously scrapes the dry product off the drum surface in sheets, flakes, or powder.
Discharge & Sizing: The scraped material drops into a screw conveyor, flaker, or pulverizer for final particle sizing and packaging.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is the difference between a Single Drum Dryer and a Double Drum Dryer?
A Single Drum Dryer uses one drum with specialized applicator rollers or dip pans, ideal for viscous, sticky, or gelatinized products. A Double Drum Dryer uses two counter-rotating drums with a central feed nip, making it highly efficient for low-to-medium viscosity solutions and slurries.
Why choose a Drum Dryer over a Spray Dryer?
Drum Dryers require significantly less thermal energy and air handling, occupy a much smaller footprint, can handle highly viscous pastes that clog spray nozzles, and deliver a unique flake/powder texture ideal for instant food products and concentrated industrial salts.
What materials are best suited for Drum Drying?
Any liquid, solution, suspension, paste, or slurry with high dissolved or suspended solids, such as pre-gelatinized starches, fruit purees, milk, chemical salts, pharmaceutical extracts, feed yeast, and ZLD industrial sludge.
How is the moisture content controlled on a Drum Dryer?
Moisture content is precisely controlled by adjusting steam pressure (drum surface temperature), drum rotation speed (residence time), film thickness (gap/feed setting), and internal steam condensate evacuation.
